Fantastic 8bb-related news from the Pulitzer music folks this year.
Firstly, a hearty congratulations to David Lang (above, with Michael Gordon, shamelessly flaunting 8bb paraphernalia), whose moving work “The Little Match Girl Passion” won the Pulitzer Prize for Music 2008. Thanks to a new perk of their fabulous commissioning program, you can hear an accomplished recording of David’s work for free on Carnegie’s website. (This commissioning program also helped bring Steve Reich’s virtuosic new work for us, Double Sextet, into the world.) 8bb is touring a new work of David’s as part of the Bang on a Can project singing in the dead of night; it will get its New York debut on April 17 at Carnegie Hall.
Secondly, Stephen Hartke’s finely crafted, mercurial, ceaselessly imaginative new work Meanwhile was nominated for the same award. This is the first time an 8bb-commissioned work has been nominated for this well-respected prize, and you can listen to an interview with the thoughtful composer, featuring musical examples from the work’s Richmond premiere, here.
Below, the Kap watches as Hartke finds the most effective place for a sock full of piano-string-muting BB pellets :
