I haven’t really done one of these before, but having seen some hilarious (and revealing) results at Deceptively Simple and Inside the Classics, I thought it was again time for thirteen ways readers to delve into the depths of my strange, strange psyche, by way of this meme. I know, so fun, right? Here goes.
The rules.
1. Put your iTunes/ music player on Shuffle
2. For each question, press the next button to get your answer.
3. YOU MUST WRITE THAT SONG NAME DOWN NO MATTER WHAT
I love rules.
1. If someone says ‘Is this OK?’ you say?
“Hallelujah,” Rufus Wainwright, live bootleg
And, just like Rufus, I mean every word.
2. What would best describe your personality?
“Lully, Lulla, Thou Little Tiny Child” by Kenneth Leighton from I Sing the Birth, New York Polyphony
I have a calming effect on others, just like a modern a cappella arrangement of an ancient Christmas carol. Yep, that’s me.
3. What do you like in a guy?
“Mañanita de San Juan” from Ayre by Osvaldo Golijov, performed by Dawn Upshaw and the Andalucian Dogs
A princess taking an admiral captive and putting him to death when he won’t marry her: is the guy I like the admiral? or the princess? Discuss.
4. How do you feel today?
“Bulletproof” from True Love Waits: Christopher O’Riley plays Radiohead
Frak yeah.
5. What is your life’s purpose?
“m 311 to m 333, piano only” — a practice excerpt from Tamar Muskal’s Mirrors that Lisa recorded for Michael and me so we could work on our memory and staging
So, so true.
6. What is your motto?
“Mine” from Undeniable by Kazy
I’m a really giving person.
7. What do your friends think of you?
“Rejoicing” from Divinum Mysterium by Daniel Kellogg recorded by some group
Because of #6.
8. What do you think of your parents?
“Allelulia” by Randall Thompson from Angels on High: A Robert Shaw Christmas
I could probably be sarcastic about this if I tried, but I think it’s a really beautiful piece of music and a great sentiment that I do feel about Mom and Dad, so I’m going to listen to the rest of this track and then move on.
9. What do you think about very often?
“This Little Babe” from A Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten, Angels on High (again)
It’s true. I do go around with three part canons at the eighth note running through my head. That’s just the way I roll.
10. What does 2+2=
“Dollars and Cents,” from Amnesiac by Radiohead
I’m pretty sure this is why I switched my major from math to English.
11. What do you think of your best friend?
violence by Gordon Fitzell, played in concert by some group somewhere
Oh dear. It IS beautiful, ambient music, at least.
12. What do you think of the person you like?
“Smooth Criminal,” Anthology, Alien Ant Farm
“You’ve been hit by/you’ve been struck by/a smooth criminal.” Between Marc and me, who’s the smooth criminal? And is this the kind of stuff I should be blogging about?
13. What is your life story?
“Old Dominion,” Looking Out the Fishbowl, Eddie from Ohio
I grew up in Virginia. And then I moved away and nothing else important happened.
14. What do you want to be when you grow up?
“Ballo” from Folk Songs by Luciano Berio, performed by Dawn Upshaw
Love driving me mad. SO looking forward to that.
15. What do you think when you see the person you like?
“That I Would Be Good,” Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, Alanis Morissette
“That I would be good/even if I got and stayed sick… that I would be loved/even when I’m not myself” — I hope so.
16. What do your parents think of you?
“Alfredo (Fiorenzani)” from Duetti per due violini by Luciano Berio, played by Alexandr Bulov and Ilya Gringolts
An anxious ostinato paired with a haunting melody. I think my parents are afraid of me.
17. What will you dance to at your wedding?
“Prayer for the Dying,” Seal
Uhh — not exactly planning on getting married, so I guess I won’t have to dance to a song about overdoses. Seems good.
18. What will they play at your funeral?
“Melodia” from Sonata for Solo Violin by Bela Bartok
Anyone who’s reading this and has any power over the playlist at my funeral: this goes in only if Giles Apap does it.
19. What is your hobby/interest?
“Dividing Day,” Build a Bridge, Audra McDonald
21st century musical theater and questioning my relationships with past lovers. Fun=me.
20. What is your biggest secret?
“Not Ready to Make Nice,” Taking the Long Way, Dixie Chicks
Natalie Maines and I have the same birthday.
21. What do you think of your friends?
“Leave,” Once soundtrack, Glen Hansard
“You won’t disappoint me/I can do that myself/but I’m glad that you’ve come/now if you don’t mind/leave.” If it’s 3 AM and we’ve been playing poker for hours and I’m losing, yeah, gotta admit to this.
22. What should you post this as?
“Paralyzer,” Them vs. You vs. Me, Finger Eleven
Good song. Now I need to write to Apple, I’ve got a couple questions for them about their “Shuffle” feature….
