The Spirit of ‘76

Since two separate people have commented on the similarities between this photo (caused by this accident) and the fife-playing revolutionary in the famous Willard painting, Spirit of ‘76, I thought I would post the painting . Perhaps it is in bad taste to compare my petty air-conditioning-related mishap with the patriotic image of three wounded, heroic figures returning home from a great battle. But I like to think I do my bit for the American nationalist cause: I spell “organize” with a “z” and drop all of my extraneous “u”-s; I shop at Wall Mart; I have thrown out all of my Royal Family memorabilia; I drive aggressively; I cheer when a local sporting team wins; I gorge myself at Thanksgiving.
