After two busy and reasonable stressful weeks of rehearsal for our January-March touring schedule (henceforth known as “insanity season”), the ensemble gets a two week break. I’m off to the the wonderful land of Oz; to 100 degree heat, sunburn, hanging out at the beach, family arguments, and playing in an alumni concert for my old youth orchestra. No 1 priority is to finish memorizing the flute part of Pierrot Lunaire, Schoenberg’s 40-minute-long atonal pot-pourri. No 2 is Schwantner’s well-nigh impossible virtuoso licks in Rhiannon’s Blackbirds.
The rest of the group scatter themselves across the country, and will no doubt try to rid their brains of Schwantner’s 16th-note-insanity, Donatoni’s ensemble difficulties, Bermel’s slidey goodness, and Sanchez-Guttierez’s memorization nightmares.
Now, here’s hoping Qantas’ inflight entertainment system works for my 20-hour transit time to Australia.

Ha ha, Benny the boil sucker. Wish I’d been there..not.
Nice blog, although I can’t believe you’ve already started referring to your homeland as “Oz”…tsk tsk. Hope you have a sweet time in Brissie though! I miss it so much, am planning lots of visits for next year.
and I’m sure Qantas will pull through for you, although you’re going to have to really like Pirates of the Caribbean….like REALLY like it….
Cheers
